Ten days is, in our experience, the most common trip length for first-time visitors to Sri Lanka — long enough to cover the cultural triangle, hill country, and south coast without backtracking, but short enough to fit a standard vacation allowance. Here's exactly how we'd sequence it.

Days 1-2: Negombo & the Cultural Triangle

Most flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport late at night, so Day 1 is usually just a transfer to a beach hotel in Negombo to recover from the flight. Day 2, drive inland to Dambulla to see the cave temple, then continue to your base near Sigiriya for the evening.

Day 3: Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Climb Sigiriya at sunrise, before the heat and the tour groups arrive — the round trip takes about 1.5-2 hours. In the afternoon, either visit Polonnaruwa's ancient ruins by bicycle or head straight to Kandy, depending on your pace.

Days 4-5: Kandy

Spend a day and a half around Kandy: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, and — if your dates line up — a Kandyan cultural dance show. This is also a good point to visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the drive in from the cultural triangle.

Days 6-7: Hill Country

Take the train or drive up to Nuwara Eliya for a night among the tea estates, then continue to Ella for the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak. If you only have one hill-country night to spare, Ella generally offers more to see and do than Nuwara Eliya — our Sigiriya vs Ella comparison covers a similar trade-off in more depth.

Day 8: Yala Safari

Drive down to the Tissamaharama area for an afternoon or evening jeep safari in Yala National Park — one of the best places in the world to see leopards in the wild, alongside elephants and sloth bears.

Days 9-10: South Coast & Departure

Finish on the coast: a stop in Mirissa for whale watching if the season allows (December to April is best), an afternoon walking the ramparts of Galle Fort, and a final night near the airport before your flight home.

How to Adjust This Route

This sequence is a starting template, not a fixed rule. If whale watching matters more to you than the hill country, trim a day from Ella or Nuwara Eliya and add it to Mirissa instead. If wildlife is the priority, add a second Yala safari and drop the Polonnaruwa detour on Day 3. The one part of this itinerary we'd resist changing is the order of regions — cultural triangle, then hills, then south coast follows the natural geography of the island and avoids doubling back on the same roads, which is where a lot of DIY itineraries lose time without realizing it.

Which of Our Packages Matches This Route?

This 10-day sequence sits almost exactly between our 8-day Honeymoon Bliss Escapade and our 14-day Sri Lanka Grand Tour. We build most 10-day trips as a customized version of one of these two, adding or trimming a day in the hill country or south coast depending on what matters most to you.
